The Hermit's Peak Fire is the largest and most destructive wildfire in recorded history in New Mexico. From April to June 2022, it poured smoke and ash into the air as it burned forests and homes in the Sangre de Christo Mountains east of Santa Fe. The burn scar measures 45 miles long by 20 miles wide, a grim testament to a wildfire's power to alter the landscape and the lives of the people within it.
